Wealth, part 3: Causes of Disparity

Some of you still owe me the assignment about inequality (aboriginals, gender) that was due today. Hand it in tomorrow (Wednesday), please.

Now that we understand how to measure disparity (GDP, HDI, etc.) and we understand the characteristics of disparity (developed vs. developing, good debt vs. debt cycle, regional and social inequalities, etc.), we will examine the causes of disparity (concentration of wealth, control over resources and the legacy of colonialism). This corresponds with pp. 160-165 in the textbook.

What are the characteristics of disparity?

The aim of the project is to understand the DISPARITY in the DISTRIBUTION of wealth. WEALTH is not evenly distributed. Thus, we are examining what are the circumstances that contribute to the UNEQUAL distribution of wealth. You are to refer to the pages in the textbook (152-159), to the handouts that I have provided (Aboriginals in Canada," "The Poverty Trap"). You may also refer to the information that you have in your chart.

The mind map below is to help you break down the information you have about disparity in the world.
