Political Compass: Left? Right? Not so simple...

Contemporary issues cannot be entirely understood without a basic understanding of political ideology. An ideology is a "system of ideas and ideals, especially one that forms the basis of economic or political theory and policy." Ideology influences our beliefs about how society should be organized and governed. Political ideologies are concerned with different aspects of a society including the economy, education, health care, social welfare, trade, the environment, immigration, use of the military, and labour laws. Thus, decisions in a country are made by those in power based on their ideology. When we examine certain international problems or issues, we need to understand the ideology of countries, of governments, and of the main actors.

What are your politics? It's too simplistic to attach labels such as "left" or "right"... but what the heck! Are you an old "lefty"? Or are you "right" in the Ronald Reagan sense? Do you belt out anti-war songs like, "Eve of Destruction" while washing dishes? Or does the "Okie from Muskogee" rock your world - after all, "even squares can have a ball"? Perhaps you get misty when you hear the old Soviet national anthem? Maybe you appreciate The Beatles "Taxman"...

Give these "quizzes" a whirl and see where you stand:

-or a much shorter political quiz, here.

During the last Canadian election, the CBC posted a "vote compass" quiz; try it here.
