Globalisation questions AND study questions for next week's test

GLOBALIZATION:
Read the two articles in the booklet; answer the following questions on the page provided at the back of the intro booklet. If you run out of room, finish on loose-leaf and staple. You will have time to complete these in class on Tuesday, but arrive with at least three completed.

1. What are some characteristics of globalisation?
2. Since WWII, world trade and foreign investment has doubled. What explains this?
3. Why is globalisation so controversial?
4. Discuss three positive and three negative results of a globalized economy.
5. What is Canada’s experience with globalisation since the 1980’s?
6. Since the mid-20th century, world trade has increased 20 times, while foreign investment has almost doubled. Explain how this is possible. 

REVIEW FOR YOUR TEST ON THURSDAY, OCT. 1:
The following questions provide you a framework to study for your test. On loose-leaf, answer them using your notes, textbook and your booklet. Answer them in point form:

1. Can you label a blank world map with 7 continents, 4 major oceans, the G8 countries and the two most populous countries in the world? Use the map provided below. Print it and label it to study effectively.
2. Complete this sentence: An ideology is….
3. Explain what it means to be politically, economically and socially "on the left," "on the right" or "in the centre"? Give an example to illustrate each.
4. Is the current Conservative government on the left or right? Provide three policies to support this.
5. Explain the differences between democracy and dictatorship. Can you provide current examples of each (are not Canada or the U.S.A.)?
6. What are the differences between communist ideology and free-market capitalism?
7. Explain what is meant by the classifications of countries: developed, developing and least developed country. Provide an example for each classification.
8. What is HDI? What is GDP? Why are these used to classify countries?
9. What are the Asian Dragons and Tigers? (textbook, p. 275; p. 149)
10. Define globalization.
11. Explain the causes of globalization.
12. What is a "multinational" corporation? What does "outsourcing" mean? Why or how do "free market polices" encourage globalization?
13. Explain how is culture affected by globalization?
14. What does the term "media" mean? What are the two functions (or roles) of media?
15. How can the media influence us? Does media necessarily tell the "truth"?
16. Why is it important to question all that we see, read or hear through media sources?
